Sixteen days of women empowerment in Uzbekistan

16-days-of-activism-2015On 20 November, a press conference in Tashkent focused on the annual campaign “From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World”, which is part of the global campaign “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” held worldwide from 25 November to 10 December in commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Although opportunities for women worldwide to realize their opportunities have been expanded, gender equality issues and violence against women remain acute; WHO’s 2014 report indicates that 35% of women worldwide have experienced either intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.

Speaking at the press conference, UNICEF Representative in Uzbekistan Robert Fuderich drew attention to the fact that violence against women has long-lasting and grave consequences: death, injury, and loss of job are just the tip of the iceberg, and to eliminate discrimination of women and achieve gender equality, it is important that everyone, the whole world, work hard in all areas.

Staff members of the Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan, the OSCE Project Coordinator in Uzbekistan, the National Association of NGOs and Uzbekistan-India Friendship Society spoke about their experience in participating in this campaign and efforts to support women’s rights. The Director of the Civil Initiative Support Center, Dilovar Kabulova, told those gathered about the goals of the campaign as well as dates being observed as part of the campaign:

25 November – International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
1 December – Worlds AIDS Day
3 December – International Day of People with Disabilities
8 December – Constitution Day in the Republic of Uzbekistan
10 December – Human Rights Day
